The Australian Greyhound Adoption Experience: What to Expect

“Getting to know you”

Once we receive your greyhound adoption application, we’ll set up a mutual convenient time for an interview. This is a conversation to learn more about you and to confirm a greyhound would fit your lifestyle. For first time adopters, we tell you more about the breed and their needs (Beware, we love to talk greyhound!). If you have children, we’ll discuss their readiness and acceptance of a newcomer to the family.

“Home Visit”

Home visits are for the sole purpose of helping you prepare a safe environment for a greyhound. Some examples: Sliding glass door? Put painter’s tape or post-it notes to alert the hound it’s not a clear opening. Wooden floors? Add some carpet runners to help the greyhound get traction. Fencing? Make sure there aren’t any items that could help a dog go over the fence. We are solution oriented and have lots of experience on preparing homes for greyhounds.

“Let’s find your Greyhound!”

We’ll work together on selecting your greyhound and walking you through the steps to adopt a greyhound from Australia. The Aussie Mates in the States team does a remarkable job of capturing the dog’s personality, assessment of prey drive (think, cat and small dog workable), size and activity level. With our experience, the profile of the greyhounds and your lifestyle, we’ll help guide you to the best fit.

We are growing and we are offering racing greyhound adoption in California and the following regions (if you’re located further away, we can still help):

  • Greyhound adoption Las Vegas

  • Greyhound adoption Phoenix

  • Greyhound adoption Tucson

  • Greyhound adoption Salt Lake City

  • Greyhound adoption Las Cruces
